The well drilling history of the Askin family in Montana began in 1910, when 14-year-old George Askin came out West
with his family to homestead in the Ismay area. Whenever time allowed, he worked for his uncle Charlie, a well driller from
South Dakota. In 1914, Charlie Askin gave up his homestead and returned to South Dakota. He left his cable tool drilling rig
for his nephew George on the condition that he did not smoke or drink until the age of 21.
That is how, at the age of 18, George F. Askin began drilling water wells in southeastern Montana.
In 1967, George’s son, Ron, bought the family business. He set to work updating the well drilling methods and equipment. The business grew and improved during the next decades, but always stayed true to its small-town family roots.
Here, integrity was the expectation, and a handshake was enough to seal the deal.
Like his father before him, Ron passed on his well drilling knowledge to his sons, who worked for the company during summers and school vacations. Ron’s oldest son, Doug, joined the business as a full-time employee in 1981, later becoming a partner and corporate officer.
To this date, not including monitoring wells, the company has drilled over 5,000 water wells in Eastern Montana.
Both Doug and Ron are licensed water well drilling contractors and monitoring well contractors.
Doug was President of the Montana Water Well Drillers Association from 2013-2015.
In 1988, Ron's brother Frank took over the pump sales and service division of Ron Askin Drilling, and started his own company: Frank Askin Well Repair. Frank retired at the end of 2015.
